Winston-Salem, NC (April 6, 2018) – The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County is seeking applications for Wells Fargo Arts-In-Education grants for its 2018-2019 grant cycle. An information session is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18 at 4 p.m. in the Hanes Conference Room in the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts, 251 N. Spruce Street. First-time applicants are especially urged to attend. The deadline for applying is Friday, May 4, by 5:00 p.m., for projects taking place October 1, 2018 – May 31, 2019.
These grants, which are funded by Wells Fargo and the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System, are available to artists and arts organizations for programs that awaken the intellectual and creative curiosity of elementary, middle and high school students. Programs for students in public, private and charter schools are all eligible for funding, Last year grants ranged from $1,500 to $10,000, with an average award of about $5,000.
Dara Silver, Grant Program Manager for The Arts Council, said Wells Fargo Arts-In-Education grants provide more than 40,000 interactions with children in WS/FC public schools each year. “Studies have shown that the arts lower the dropout rate and transform the lives of young people,” she said. “Exposure to the arts can improve self-esteem and problem solving skills as well as foster creative development and appreciation for the diversity of a community. Students enriched with arts education score higher on standardized tests and go on to bring creativity and diverse thinking into the workplace.”
