Sawtooth Building

Annually, more than 100,000 people participate in events at the Sawtooth building. The need for a new public arts space in our city is greater than ever because our facilities have not kept pace with the growth of the arts in our city, nor with the demand by the public on our facilities.
To meet these demands, we need to improve the infrastructure of the Sawtooth building. The building itself has weakened to the point of not being an effective place for arts education or public use, and its design poses multiple challenges:

  • The Sawtooth's building has sustained significant wear-and-tear over the past quarter of a century;

  • The building, because of its convoluted ramps and walkways, creates gallery spaces that are not easily accessible;
  • There are not enough classrooms, nor in the right configurations, to meet the needs of youth, photography, ceramics, painting and other arts programs. The materials that are used in many of these classrooms require significantly improved ventilation and chemical containment to improve the safety for students;
  • The building entrances open directly onto one of the city's busiest streets. We also have limited parking spaces; and;
  • We have heard from many of our partnering arts organizations and supporting corporations that there is a need for a multi-use arts facility that can be configured multiple ways for a variety of performances, meetings and events.
