What is The Arts Council?

The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County was established in 1949 and was the first locally established arts council in the United States.  Now there are more than 4,000.  The Arts Council enriches the quality of life for people in Winston-Salem and neighboring communities by raising funds for the arts, advocating for the arts, sponsoring events in conjunction with other arts organizations, providing educational opportunities strengthening cultural resources, developing social capital , and aiding economic development.

 
Why Should I Support The Arts Council?

Your gift to the arts provides support for the entire arts community — including arts organizations, educators bringing hands-on experiences to the classroom, and individual artists establishing their careers right here in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. Volunteers help The Arts Council award grants each year, making sure that a variety of arts experiences for our entire community are supported. The arts are essential to the economic vitality of our community. The local arts industry makes a $76 million economic impact and supports 2,800 full time jobs.

 
Is The Arts Council supported by the United Way?

The Arts Council is NOT a United Way agency. The United Way and The Arts Council conduct campaigns which are similar in format — raising money in united fundraising appeals that is then re-granted throughout the community. The United Way supports primarily human service organizations. The Arts Council supports our arts community.

 
What is the Renaissance Society? How can I become a member?

The Renaissance Society is a giving category established to recognize and honor philanthropic leadership. Members of the Renaissance Society are donors who have contributed $1,000 or more to the annual arts campaign.

 
Who supports the annual arts campaign? Are contributions to The Arts Council tax-deductible?

Thousands of residents in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County — just like you — support the arts campaign. Contributions from local businesses and employees account for nearly 60 percent of the entire amount donated to The Arts Council each year. State, city and county governments also support the annual arts campaign. Yes, The Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and donations are tax deductible.
